Success conditions for joint investments in healthy cities

In this conceptual paper we develop a framework to analyse the success conditions for joint investments in healthy cities. First we explain the context and rationale for the development of this framework: the concern of several public and private stakeholders in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) about the health situation in the city. Their aim is to improve this situation, but the question is what interventions are needed and what kind of partnerships should be developed. In this article we argue that it is important to understand the fundamental developments that affect the development and management of cities. Insight in these trends helps us to formulate four conditions that we consider essential for joint investments in healthy cities: putting the citizen central, using an integrated approach, developing partnerships, and demonstrating the business case. Finally, we briefly discuss how we intend to apply our framework in an empirical study.
