Dr Willem van Winden (PhD) is an associate professor at the Rotterdam School of Economics and the European Institute for Comparative Urban Research. He is an expert in the field of local/urban economics, local economic strategies, knowledge-based economic development and the role of ICTs in cities. He was involved in numerous international studies in these fields. Also, he is a lecturer in a number of Master’s courses. Recent research work includes a comparative study on cluster strategies in a number of large European cities, and a comparative study on the consequences of the knowledge based economy for urban regions. Current work focuses on the changing role of ‘traditional’ manufacturing sectors in the urban economy. Dr van Winden is (co) author of several books and a number of scientific articles in the field of urban economics, strategies and policies. Currently, Dr Van Winden is Professor on Knowledge economy at Hogeschool Amsterdam, research fellow at the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM) and affiliated with the Rotterdam School of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Department of Regional & Transport Economics.
